NEW DELHI: Amendments to a legislation that will have far-reaching impact on women — Commission of Sati (Prevention) Act, 1987 — is likely to be deliberated by the Union Cabinet on Thursday. The proposed changes in the Sati Act include making the entire community accountable for the crime. Under the proposed legislation, coercing a woman to commit sati has been made a non-bailable offence.
Imprisonment under the law has been increased to a minimum of three years up to 10 years and fine has been enhanced from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000. A woman is only liable for punishment under the new law if it can be proved that she was not forced into the act. The proposed legislation also hardens its stand against glorification of women who have been driven to commit sati. "Whosoever does any act for glorification of sati shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than three years but which may extend to 10 years," the proposed amendment suggests.
